2024 Volvo XC40 Specs, Reviews, Price, and Release Date. Volvo’s entry-level XC40 crossover SUV is an alternative to the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes GLA and Infiniti QX30. The model earns the attention with its angular exterior design and what’s more important with premium interior and plenty of available comfort and tech features. It also gets power from the competent turbocharged engines but the 2024 Volvo XC40 should go all-electric. There could be more for the next model year as Volvo might introduce a new T3 version with the three-cylinder engine for the US market and this unit should also be the part of the plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Volvo hasn’t clarified when these options will appear and their specs but the T3 version is already available in Europe. The brand’s plan to electrify the entire car range with some kind of electric system is a known fact but the XC40 would be the first model with Volvo’s badge to go all-electric.
Already available T4 and T5 powertrain will likely return in the same form but Volvo might also add new trim options for the 2024 model year.
2024 VOLVO XC40 POWERTRAINS
The 2024 Volvo XC40 will repeat the front-wheel-drive T4 and all-wheel drive T5 powertrain options in the US but the range could be expanded with PHEV, all-electric, and three-cylinder options.
The all-electric XC40 should debut by the end of the year and go on sale in 2024 which could happen for the 2024 model year. The three-cylinder unit is already the part of the European version and Volvo promised its arrival in the US but hasn’t confirmed the timeline. This 1.5-liter engine makes 156 hp and torque of 195 pound-feet in the Euro-spec model and Volvo combines it with the six-speed automatic transmission. The all-electric model should target a range of 275 miles.
The PHEV version should use the mentioned 1.5-liter three-cylinder unit in the combination with electric motor propulsion for the total output around 250 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque.
Volvo will return the T4 version with the 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine and front-wheel drive. The engine is in the mix with the 8-speed automatic transmission and delivers 187 hp and torque of 221 pound-feet.
The same displacement combined with the all-wheel drive in the T5 version will boost the power and torque to 248 hp and 258 pound-feet respectively. The T5 powertrain accelerates to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds as Volvo claims.
The T4 version earned 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway as per EPA standards. The all-wheel-drive T5 should match 23 mpg city and drop to 31 mpg highway.
2024 VOLVO XC40 DESIGN
The XC40 debuted as the 2025 model on the new Compact Modular Architecture and won’t change visually until the next mid-update. The possible arrival of the PHEV and all-electric versions with the 2024 Volvo XC40 shouldn’t bring radical styling distinction between already available and new models.
The Volvo XC40 has more angular design than popular XC60 and XC90 models. The model also uses a concave grille version in contrast to the convex grille on the mentioned models. The Thor’s Hammer headlights and familiar shape of the taillights are common for the Volvo’s SUV range.
The Volvo XC40 will offer a broad palette of the exterior colors including two-tone options. The base version will ride on the 18-inch alloy wheels and the largest option will be 20-inch alloys.
INTERIOR, EQUIPMENT
Volvo used the space well inside the cabin of the XC40 and equips it with high-quality materials and top-notch technologies.
The model has comfortable seats and provides up to 47.2 cubic feet of the cargo space. With the rear seats upright the cargo room shrinks to 20.7 cubes.
The XC40 will offer standard features such as LED headlights, a power liftgate, automatic wipers, keyless ignition, power front seats, etc. The base equipment list will also include a 9-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi, HD and satellite radio, eight speakers as well as the safety systems such as forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and mitigation.
Upgrades will include navigation, a panoramic sunroof, hands-free tailgate, heated seats and steering wheel, upgraded upholstery and textures, Harman Kardon sound system, etc. The safety extras will cover adaptive cruise control, active lane control, surround vision cameras, and blind spot monitoring.
