2022 Ford Explorer: Specs, Redesign, ST Version, Hybrid, & Photos. The recent redesign has brought a lot of novelties and the new generation comes significantly better than its predecessor. It rides better, it looks better and it brings a lot of new features. That doesn’t mean that the Blue Oval company has ended with novelties. It won’t stop, as it is time for new technologies, particularly in terms of electrification. The biggest novelty for the next year is expected to be 2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid. The testing model has been spotted and most of the details are already known. Of all, the new powertrain will be both powerful and efficient. It will be pretty capable in terms of towing. On the other side, don’t count on a too-long all-electric range.
Other than a new hybrid version, things are about to remain the same. The Ford Explorer 2022 will carry on with familiar design characteristics, which have been introduced recently. A couple of additions in terms of standard equipment seem possible. The rest will remain the same.
2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid
This is definitely the most important novelty for the next year. We are eagerly waiting to see 2022 Ford Explorer Plug-in hybrid. The testing model has been spotted already and it looks largely the same as the standard gasoline model. Still, things are completely different under the hood. The system is based on a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, which comes in pair with 13.1-kWh battery, which took its place under the cargo floor. The system is pretty efficient, so it’s no wonder that the total output will go up to 444 horsepower and impressive 620 pound-feet of torque. As you may presume, all-electric autonomy won’t be very impressive. This battery capacity doesn’t promise more than 15-20 miles of all-electric range. Details about fuel economy are still unavailable.
The 2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid won’t feature impressive all-electric range but it will be pretty capable. Latest reports are suggesting that the max towing capacity will go up to pretty respectable 5.500 pounds.
2022 Ford Explorer Specs
The rest of the powertrain lineup is about to carry on in the same way. That would mean a choice between two familiar EcoBoost engines. Base models will carry on with a well-known 2.3-liter turbo-four, which delivers a pretty respectable output of 300 horsepower. There is a new 3.0-liter twin-turbo, which delivers around 365 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come in pair with a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
Of course, the 2022 Ford Explorer ST will come without changes. This hi-performance version comes with the same V6 engine but tuned to full 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. This engine also comes in pair with a new 10-speed automatic gearbox.
On the inside, the best we could see is the addition of new color schemes. Other than that, things are about to remain the same. The new 2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid could come with a little bit different instrument cluster, but the rest will remain untouched. This means the same cabin layout, which looks pretty decent. It’s not the most attractive cabin in the class, but the overall quality is pretty good. Materials are fine and soft to the touch, while higher trims also add a bit of luxury features, such as leather upholstery, massaging seats and more.
This SUV can accommodate up to six passengers. Compared to the previous generation, the new model comes with a significantly longer wheelbase, so the overall comfort seems pretty impressive. The second row comes with captain’s chairs, while the third one can accommodate adults. The cargo area is also pretty generous. You can count on about 18 cubic feet behind rear seats and almost 90 cubic feet of total cargo space, which are pretty respectable numbers for the class, pretty much on par with models like Chevy Traverse and Honda Pilot.
We could see a couple of additions in the 2022 Ford Explorer, but things should remain pretty much the same in general. That means a pretty decent list of standard equipment in base models, which includes things like an 8-inch touchscreen, decent audio systems, a couple of USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto etc. You can also get a vertically oriented touchscreen, though most reviews claim that the base one works much better, especially when it comes to smartphone integration and other operations that include a split-screen.
In terms of safety, there is a notable improvement over the previous generation. All models come standard with Co-Pilot360. This suite of the safety system is pretty nice and it includes a variety of advanced safety features. Some of the highlights are a blind-spot monitor with a cross-traffic alert system, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and a forward collision system with automatic braking and pedestrian detection. Of course, you can get even more features in higher trims, systems like adaptive cruise control system with lane-centering technology, an automatic rear braking system, and Ford’s latest parking assistant.
2022 Ford Explorer Release Date and Price
We are pretty sure that the upcoming model won’t hit the market before the last quarter of the next year, though the new 2022 Ford Explorer Plug-in Hybrid could hit showrooms a little bit earlier. When it comes to the price, base models will go around 34.000 dollars.
